One question we get asked a lot is "can I write a script in Novelcrafter", and the answer is "yes"! Whilst the default prompting is configured for novels, it is easy to change this yourself. Once you have looked at our resources on how to clone your own prompt, you can begin rewriting it to write in a script format.
This is the general purpose prompt, as seen in Novelcrafter. You can see in the circled area the instructions used to prompt the generation of prose.
To write a screenplay, you will need to change this part of the prompt to include in the rules of screenplay writing. Here is an example of a prompt that I have tried, and the resultant script generated. You can see that it is not perfect, but with more work on the prompt, you could get a usable script. This example is a starting point to illustrate that you can write scripts within Novelcrafter.
Another alteration that would be worth trying is to give the AI examples of how you would want the script formatted within the prompting.
What model should I use when generating a screenplay?
We would recommend either models trained on lots of screenplays (like cinematika) or those that are best at following instructions (GPT4-Turbo, Claude Opus or Sonnet etc). We recommend you experiment with lots of models to find which suits your writing style the closest.
